China has predicted that by the year 2020 there will be a shortage of brides for between 24 - 30 million marriageable men. Consider this; the population of the state of Texas is midway between those figures. The shortage is due not to natural causes in the ratio of boys to girls born in China but because boys are preferable to girls since they are depended upon to carry on the family name and also take care of their parents who reach old age. Girl babies are regularly abandoned, aborted or killed and China has become a wellspring of adoptable infants for infertile couples all over the world. Pregnant women are not allowed to know or to be told the sex of their unborn child.
The fallout from China's one child policy has already begun with the kidnapping of young women who are sold to men outside of metropolitan areas. In most cases, those women who are recovered are not able to return with any children born while being held as 'wives'. With seven years remaining to reach 2020 the problem will become increasingly severe and the options are neither reasonable nor acceptable by today's standards.
While this situation appears to have been predictable, it has only recently become an issue with the Chinese themselves. China admittedly expects civil unrest and violence. The question is, how will they handle it??
