That is one of the most important signs of a good teacher. A teacher who can't believe in a student's ability isn't able to to teach anything the child hasn't already shown an interest in.
omg - my fourth grade memorable teacher was Mr Couch for history and we called her Ms Grouch. She she would smack your hand with a ruler if you did anything even slightly wrong. Wow maybe she is the reason I never liked history. Just goes to show what a difference a teacher can make. I'm glad you ha...

A teacher wins or loses a class in the first hour that she teaches them. If they can't feel her love for them and what she is doing then she will never be an inspiration. They might as well put the kids in front of a robot.
Mine was probably my 9th grade art teacher. She was nice, funny, encouraging and she saw my talent when no one else had. When something I painted got picked as the best for the first time I radiated. Mine was probably my 9th grade art teacher. She was nice, funny, encouraging and she saw my talent when no one else had. When something I painted got picked as the best for the first time I radiated. She was very good at what she did and in inspiring art students to reach what is unique about them and bring it to life in a material way.
A good art teacher can teach profound lessons about humanity, math, history and other subjects because art is an expression of them all and requires an element of each to be accomplished.
Mrs. Estelle in fourth and fifth grades. She saved me from playground bullies, built my confidence, taught me to use the card catalog at the library and prepared a set of 10 envelopes, each containing a single year's reading list by author, title and/or category. She saved me from playground bullies, built my confidence, taught me to use the card catalog at the library and prepared a set of 10 envelopes, each containing a single year's reading list by author, title and/or category. She ensured that I received a classics/humanities education. I blossomed under her care.
Well this is going back quite a ways, but I would have to say it was Sister Francis in second grade. I all but failed first grade because I had low self esteem and was picked on by other kids. Well this is going back quite a ways, but I would have to say it was Sister Francis in second grade. I all but failed first grade because I had low self esteem and was picked on by other kids. She took me under her wing and taught me that God loved me and as a child of God who worshipped the King of Kings that I had no reason to not feel like a prince on earth. After second grade I was a different kid.
A teacher who is allowed to include God in daily subjects and act like a Christian teacher is a rare gem anymore. I am glad you got a good one so early on.
Ms. Graney. Red-hair, vivacious and strong willed 10th grade speech teacher. Claim to fame, attending drama school with Paul Newman --a very cool thing to a teen back in the early 60's. Every Thursday, she assigned me 20 minutes at the library to prepare a seven minute talk and then to deliver it to the class. She encourage me to enter extemporaneous speech competitions. Little did I know this mentoring prepared me for earning a living years later.
A teacher who can steer a child in a manner that leads to a vocation is doing what all teachers previously aspired to do. Nowadays, it is rare to find one not just going through the government declared motions.
My fifth grade teacher, Mr. Rout! He had a different way of teaching kids...we weren't all the same little cut outs that had to fit into the same little pigeon hole. We were allowed to be individuals. He used Visual, Audio and tactile ways for us to learn.... I never saw him get angry with a child. ...

He also was my Choir teacher and he helped me improve my singing voice and to not be so shy.
You learned because you respected your teachers and they respected you enough to make sure you got a good education. Respect is missing in society anymore and it seems like especially in today's schools.
You know, Val--You're a pretty good teacher yourself! Obviously the love of your life found the same qualities in you that you found in her. Thank you for posting this poll and taking the time for all the thoughtful responses you made to us.
I've never seen or even met another teacher who taught his way. He truly was one of a kind!
