Sometimes achieving your dreams includes having a yard sale on Mothers Day.
When I came to the conclusion about what my next big dream should be, I promised I would sell everything I had if that is what it took to fulfill the mission I believe God gave me. At the time, I wasn’t really thinking about having a “yard sale” since I live on a boat, but that is the opportunity I have been given and here I find myself facing that prospect this upcoming Mother’s Day Weekend. I realize any funds I make from a yard sale no matter how successful it may be, will just be a drop in the bucket of fund raising to make it happen. However, every journey begins with just one step and no matter how small it is, it is the most important step of all.
It is also very fitting that besides my own items that have been in a storage room since we sold our home and moved aboard, a portion of what I am selling includes things that came from my mother’s house after she passed away. She was a collector of probably every gift she had ever been given as well as all of the treasures she herself had found at thrift shops and yard sales. For three years her things have been packed in boxes in a storage room where they are doing no one any good nor giving anyone else any pleasure.
As I handled the boxes to get them ready to go to the sale, I thought of her and saw her smiling to know some of her treasures might soon be the same for someone else. After all it is because she suggested I send “To Achieve Your Dreams Remember Your ABCs” to Dear Abby that they ever became published or a best-selling poster. It was originally something I put on paper only for myself and to share with my family. It is due to the ABCs that this next related dream is even on my radar.
I suspect opening those boxes and handling her things again will be bittersweet. I miss her so very much, but the memories that seeing her things will bring back will be precious and comforting. I think it will be in a way like spending mother’s day with her again. There are even things I bought her for Mother’s Days in the past that will be put out on the tables. I like to believe she will somehow be there with me guiding her items to just the right people to enjoy or make use of and I can’t think of a better way to pass on her treasures than to share them possibly with other mothers on their special day.
For anyone who happens to purchase an item or receive a gift that came from one of my yard sale tables, just know it has been blessed by my angel of a mother whether it was originally hers or mine. It was her upbringing that inspired me to want to be a better person and help others and for that many dreams including my own have been inspired.
