Happy Punch so named due to the incredible happy buzz you get from drinking it. Real Name Chatham Artillery Punch, an old recipe from the pre and civil war days in Savannah GA. There are a lot of stories of big events where famous civil war military figures attended and where this punch was served.
Maybe that is why the south lost. lol
1 1/2 gallons orf catawba wine (HAS TO BE CATAWBA)
1/2 gallon rum
1 quart gin
1 quart brandy
1/2 pint benedictine
2 quarts marashino cherries
1 1/2 quarts rye
1 1/2 gallons tea
2 1/2 pounds brown sugar
1 1/2 quarts orange juice
1 1/2 quarts lemon juice
make 26-48 hours prior to serving
add one case champagne upon serving
I first had this during a boat expidition to Savannah GA. I loved it so much that the next year in Hawaii on my birthday I got my best friend to find the Cawtawba wine because no one in Hawaii had it or thouht they could get it. For my birthday they sent me all of the ingredients except the champagne, I bought that myself. I forget which brand it was but it was a fairly decent brand because I bought a case of it and it was pretty expensive.
(I also added lots of fresh orange slices and a few lemon slices.. yum yum!)
I bought a new garbage can to make it in and then stored it in jars. (The champagne was in there too it didn't matter it still kept well.)
It was good for as long as it lasted. It became a famous drink on the N shore among my friends on Oahu because everyone got so incredibly happy and um, stimulated (??) lol after drinking it. For months on end people would ask me if I had any happy punch left.
UM NO ... we eventually drank it all.
My granddaughter-in-law got a little drunk, took the bag out of a box of wine and walked around with what appeared to be a goat bladder!
I thought your recipe would be good from this same apparatus.
