I think it depens on the kinds of sharks! lol I've snorkeled along side the reef sharks in the keys, (with my trusty diving knife at the ready though lol) and it didn't bother me after I got used to it. But some sharks, like bull sharks are highly agressive as are the hammer heads although not as bad as the bulls. Feeding times, I stay out of the water now. Although pre Jaws days I would go swimming in the ocean by myself even at night a lot! But I have a great deal of respect for the damage that can be done by sharks. My first trip to Hawaii, there was a surf board with a biteout of it that took almost the whole center section out of it hanging on a tree at a famous surf spot. They will bite people even though most are not out to do so. A very very stupid thing that people do is feed sharks from boats for tourists. This causes them to lose their fear and excites their curiosity in people. My first boating trip to the bahamas, before people were doing it around here I became very scared on several occasions when the sharks would see us snorkeling and diving and just bee line straight at us thinking we were going to feed them! This is a learned behavior and people are teaching them the wrong things with this very popular activity now world wide.
They have to eat too! It's the same thing as bears, etc.. you can't take it for granted when you are in the ocean, same thing when you are in the wild woods.
For me, I don't like to go into the ocean unless I know for absolutely certain that it is clear. I'll stick with the lakes around here!

The number of breeds that exist is mind boggling..can't recall the number but it is high!
