Rather, I would bet that the early church headgear designers imitated what they saw in the near east because Rome's pagan religious garb was very different. I think it has to do with the Greek letters that spell fish and stories of how Christians would draw half fish and if another saw it would finish the drawing to recognize each other. But don't quote me on that.
