Recently someone I know got a letter from the IRS saying they may have been subject of identity theft. I made sure the number on the call letter was actually to the IRS - because these days anything can be faked!

yep the person I know went to the IRS and had to prove he was who he said he was before they would release his tax return --- he's still waiting for it
