Florida doesn't have enough doctors for Medicaid expansion, lobby group says

Article appeared in the Sun-Sentinel, excerpted for brevity.  2/22/2013

NOTE:  Article says:  the federal government is committed to paying no less than 90 percent of the cost.     Is that supposed to relieve taxpayers from liability?  I don't think so!  The federal government is OUR money!

The Florida Legislature goes along with Gov. Rick Scott's recommendation to offer Medicaid coverage to an additional 1 million Floridians — part of the Affordable Care Act that takes affect next Jan.  FMA says that shortage will only get worse.

About 15 million Floridians have health insurance today, and Obamacare, which requires most adults to have coverage by January, could add as many as 2.5 million more.

Of all patients, people covered by Medicaid may have the hardest time finding a doctor; only 59 percent of the state's physicians are taking new Medicaid patients, according to a Kaiser Health News study.

Governor wants a three-year expansion that would cover single adults and families earning up to 138 percent of the poverty line; the costs would be fully covered by the federal government. If the expansion is re-approved after three years, the federal government is committed to paying no less than 90 percent of the cost.

Health care advocates who back the expansion say they aren't worried either.

Not a crisis brewing? The only way I buy that is if they mean it isn't brewing, it is already  here!

Probably a good thing I moved to La. Although, according to a 'study', La. is the saddest state in the Union. Hawaii is the happiest. http://www.redorbit.com/n...

Hawaii is a nice place. I vacationed there a couple of times. I took a submarine dive 90 feet to the ocean floor and saw a variety of fish. My biggest disappointments was being invited to a pig roast. I envisioned a pig roasting in a pit. Instead, I was led to a hotel's dining room and did a cafeter...

It is very difficult here. I see a lot of elders who wait a long time to get a doctor. But I have spoken to Doctors and understand their plight. They can't afford to deal with the federal government and their payments in many cases. What is going to happen to us all when this bill kicks in?

Absolutely.  Lots of doctors bailed out of both Medicare and Medicaid, if they ever accepted it at all.  The additional patient load is going to clog up the system.  I hope my doctor values our 30 yr relationship!!

Remember when doctors made house calls. lol...I do. I always had good doctors until I moved to La. 10 yrs ago. My favorite doctor was a 1960 Cuban regugee. He migrated to Miami before moving to Texas. He and our family forged a good doctor-patient relationship that extended outside of his practice. ...

We don't have a problem yet because a lot of our doctors are here for the atmosphere not the money.
