I can't make up my mind if I am going to go there for this or not. I have a free place to stay but the town will be INSANE. Their last election basically gave them the choice between a Democrat and a Democrat for mayor, so many reading this will likely better understand why many are none too pleased about the way things are going for the organization of this huge event. The Mayor is taking a lot of heat over it from the locals. St Augustine gets record numbers of visitors jam packed on many occasions but this has been several years in the planning and is expected to be the most visitors ever to the city for one occasion. But it may be one of those things that I just have to witness for myself. We'll see....

From the article:

"While details are still being hashed out, a royal visit has been part of the city’s plan for years, according to Dana Ste. Claire, director of the 450th Commemoration.

The cap of a multi-year celebration for St. Augustine’s 450th anniversary will be the Celebrate 450! festival from Sept. 4-8. In addition to Celebrate 450!, the U.S.–Spain Council International Summit will be held Sept. 18-20. The forum alternates between U.S. and Spain and brings together more than 200 council members.

Spanish Ambassador Ramón Gil-Casares and Consul General Cristina Barrios, of the Spanish Embassy, met with Mayor Nancy Shaver, City Manager John Regan and 450th department staff Wednesday to talk about the visit."

I haven't heard about this until now. How are they going to handle security? I would pay attention to that before deciding.
