I'm late in posting this, but a little known fact. ... without Columbus Day the Pledge of Allegiance would never have been written. Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister and a socialist, was asked to write the Pledge in 1892 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival to the Americas.
